Marine Oil Spill Response
The recent use of these oil dispersants and their toxicity has highlighted the need to develop alternative less toxic dispersants. We propose the development and testing of inherently safer oil dispersants by applying the principles of Green Chemistry in tandem with toxicity screening. This iterative design approach will provide fundamental insight into the relationship between surfactant structure, toxicity and dispersal effectiveness. This will inform the design and synthesis of highly effect dispersants with low toxicity.
The second project is aimed at creating a tool to guide decision makers and inform the public about the greenest responces to marine oil spills. More information can be found on the project wiki.
