Magic Erasers are widely used for tough cleaning, but the melamine-formaldehyde foam they rely on sheds millions of microplastic particles during use—introducing persistent plastics and toxic chemicals into homes and the environment. This project challenged the team to design a safer alternative cleaning sponge that preserves the Magic Eraser’s powerful nanoscale scrubbing mechanism while eliminating hazardous materials.

Using a green chemistry framework, the team worked with the USDA Bioproducts Research Unit to evaluate potential replacements based on technical performance, human health hazards, environmental persistence, and scalability. Rather than eliminating the abrasive cleaning mechanism, the goal was to ensure that particles generated during use would biodegrade safely and avoid toxic or persistent byproducts.

The analysis identified five promising strategies: a PLA-based “USDA Erase” sponge, PLA-chitosan and PLA-hydroxyapatite composites, and two natural polymer approaches—lignin eco-foam and mycelium-based materials. Each option maintains the nanoscale structures needed for effective cleaning while significantly reducing toxicity and environmental persistence. While PLA-based materials show strong performance and scalability, the naturally derived lignin and mycelium foams offer the lowest overall hazard profiles.

Together, these findings demonstrate that bio-based materials and green chemistry design can replace conventional cleaning foams with safer, biodegradable alternatives—without sacrificing cleaning power.
